Landmark event on “Pioneering Sustainable Aviation”: 4th Berlin Aviation Summit (BAS) on 4 June

How can we achieve carbon-neutral aviation by 2050? What progress have we already made and what challenges still need to be mastered? And how can stakeholders from politics, industry, and research work together effectively to create the energy transition in the sky? All these questions and more will be answered at the Berlin Aviation Summit on 4 June at the Axica at the Brandenburg Gate. The BAS traditionally takes place on the day before ILA and has established itself as the international platform for future-facing ideas in aviation.
Under the title “Pioneering Sustainable Aviation,” leading personalities from politics, research, industry, aviation, finance, and energy will convene, exchange ideas and shape the future of the industry in front of more than 300 invited guests.
Many top German politicians will contribute, including Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action Dr Robert Habeck MP; Dr Volker Wissing MP, Federal Minister for Digital and Transport; Minister of State in the Federal Chancellery Sarah Ryglewski MP; Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister for Digital and Transport Oliver Luksic MP; and Federal Government Coordinator of German Aerospace Policy Dr Anna Christmann MP.
In an exceptional line-up, Guillaume Faury (Airbus), David Calhoun (Boeing), Olivier Andriès (Safran), and the president of the German Aerospace Industries Association (BDLI), Dr Michael Schoellhorn, are among the many international CEOs who will discuss the transformation of aviation toward climate compatibility.
Dr Robert Habeck, Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action of the Federal Republic of Germany: “Aviation is a key technology and a guarantor of prosperity and jobs in Europe. At the same time, decarbonization poses challenges for the sector. The German government has set itself the objective of making Germany a pioneer in climate-neutral aviation. This can only succeed if we maintain our leading position in aviation research and drive innovation in environmentally friendly propulsion technologies. To this end, it is important to regularly exchange ideas with the industry and its experts from around the world.”
Dr Volker Wissing, Federal Minister for Digital and Transport: “Air travel will continue to grow in importance. It is therefore vital to future-proof this mode of transportation by making it climate-friendly. We need to pave the way for this now. With a robust regulatory framework and a technology-neutral, innovation-driven approach, we can find the best solutions for affordable, climate-friendly aviation while ensuring fair competition. Coordination between industry, the research community and policymakers is key here, and the Berlin Aviation Summit provides a valuable forum for this.”
Dr Michael Schoellhorn, BDLI President: “We are delighted that the Berlin Aviation Summit has established itself as an ideal platform for close and focused exchange between industry leaders and government representatives. This coming-together is also necessary, because time is of the essence if we are to achieve our ambitious goals. Above all, we need reliable and strong funding for research and the right regulatory framework, for example for the ramp-up of alternative fuels, while at the same time limiting further bureaucratic burdens.”
The BAS is organized by the BDLI and the German Aerospace Center (DLR). Partners of the conference are the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK), the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV) and the European Commission. The BAS takes place every two years on the day before ILA, the largest aerospace trade fair in the EU this year, which will open its doors at BER Airport from 5 to 9 June.
